One of the most challenging aspects of any amphitheatre design are those associated with sound and acoustics. Indoor venues rely upon heavy isolating walls to keep outside sound out and inside sound in. Outdoor facilities simply can’t do that. However, the Cobb County Parks and Recreation Department, the owner of this venue, wanted one where the seats would be sheltered from Georgia ’s summer sun and frequent afternoon and evening rains.

The roof presented the perfect opportunity to provide better acoustical control for the benefit of both the venue itself and the neighborhood around it. CDAI provided acoustical advice that addressed the location of the stage and auxiliary spaces as well as the shape of the roof. This highly successful design created a space where sound is reflected within the audience area. That means that less sound energy is required for the audience to hear properly, so less energy escapes into the surrounding neighborhood. This resulted in a venue only relatively low levels of amplified sound are needed for most performances and where classical music can be performed without any amplification at all..
